Where is Xander Bogaerts from?
Xander Bogaerts, known as "The X-Man," is a shortstop for the San Diego Padres. But where did this MLB superstar come from? Bogaerts was born and raised in San Nicolaas, a quiet community just twelve miles southeast of Oranjestad, the capital and largest city of Aruba. San Nicolaas is a literal stone's throw from the beach and boasts a year-round temperature in the low- to mid-80s, giving Bogaerts the best of everything growing up.
Bogaerts played several sports growing up, including soccer, basketball, and volleyball. However, it was baseball that stole his heart. Bogaerts was introduced to the sport when he was just 4 or 5 years old, playing catch with his twin brother, Jair, and his uncle, Glenroy, a local baseball coach, in the backyard of his grandmother's house. "Before any teams or anything, it was my uncle who played with me and Jair from a young age," he recalled. "I remember learning the basics of baseball and learning how to play the game. [Glenroy] wasn't a professional coach or anything, but he taught us a lot about playing the game the right way."
As Bogaerts and his twin brother grew older, they started participating in away tournaments, traveling to places like Puerto Rico, Panama, Dominica, and Curacao. However, despite his love of the game, Bogaerts' family placed a high priority on education, and he had to balance his time between school and baseball. His mother, Sandra Brown, still lives in the four-bedroom home in which Bogaerts grew up.
Bogaerts did well in school, especially in math, and as his baseball skills developed, he started to help the other players. He played on dirt fields between the ages of 9-12 and helped lead his team to several Latin American tournaments, where it competed for a spot in the Little League World Series. In 2010, Aruba won the Senior League World Series in Bangor, Maine, the first such honor for the island nation.
Bogaerts' story is a testament to the power of hard work and determination. Despite growing up in a small town on a small island, he was able to achieve his dream of playing in the major leagues through a combination of natural talent and a relentless work ethic. His success has inspired countless young athletes in Aruba and beyond, and he continues to be a role model for aspiring baseball players everywhere.
