Johnson was born in Cumberland, Maryland, and attended the University of Maryland, where he played college football for the Terrapins. In 2019, he was selected by the Detroit Lions in the sixth round of the NFL Draft. Johnson played two seasons for the Lions before being claimed off waivers by the New York Jets in 2020.
