Aledmys Diaz is a Cuban-born professional baseball player who currently plays in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Oakland Athletics. But did Aledmys Diaz play college ball? The answer is no. Diaz did not play college baseball. Instead, he played in the Cuban National Series, which is the primary amateur baseball competition in Cuba.

Diaz began his baseball career playing for the Naranjas de Villa Clara, based in Santa Clara, Cuba. He debuted in the 2007-08 season as a utility player and continued to improve his offensive production in the following seasons. Diaz defected from Cuba in 2012 while playing with the Cuban national baseball team in a tournament in the Netherlands.

After spending 18 months playing in Mexico City, Diaz held a showcase in February 2014 to audition for a contract with MLB clubs. He signed a four-year contract with the St. Louis Cardinals worth $8 million on March 9, 2014.

Diaz was initially assigned to the Palm Beach Cardinals of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League and was later promoted to the Springfield Cardinals of the Class AA Texas League. Diaz battled injuries in 2015 but bounced back in the last 45 games of the season, batting .333 with a .404 OBP and a .574 SLG. The Cardinals reinstated him to the 40-man roster after the season.

Diaz became the starting shortstop for the Cardinals in 2016 and made his major league debut on April 5, 2016. He has since played for the Toronto Blue Jays, Houston Astros,  and currently plays for the Oakland Athletics.
