Trea Turner is a professional baseball player for the Philidelphia Phillies in Major League Baseball (MLB). Before he became a pro player, Turner played for North Carolina State University, also known as N.C. State. He was recruited by only two college programs, N.C. State and Florida International University, and chose to play for the former. Turner had a remarkable career in college baseball and set several records.

As a freshman in 2012, Turner transitioned from playing as a shortstop to a third baseman. He had a .336 batting average, a .432 on-base percentage, and stole 57 bases while being caught stealing only four times. His 57 steals were more than the team totals of 158 Division I teams and set an NC State record. Turner was named to the All-Tournament Team in the 2012 ACC Tournament.

In 2013, Turner had a .378 batting average with seven home runs, 41 runs batted in (RBIs), and 27 stolen bases. He was named to the All-ACC first team and was named a finalist for the Brooks Wallace Award, given to the best shortstop in NCAA's Division I. Turner played for the United States national collegiate baseball team in the summer of 2013. In his junior year, he hit .321 with eight home runs and 26 stolen bases. After the season, he was named the winner of the Brooks Wallace Award.

Turner has said that getting to the College World Series in 2013, when the Wolfpack finished the season 50-16, was a memorable moment. He enjoyed the relationships he built with the coaches and his teammates and appreciated the beauty of the campus in Raleigh, where N.C. State is located. Turner was interested in studying engineering, and N.C. State's engineering program is highly regarded.

Chris Hart, N.C. State's assistant coach, was responsible for recruiting Turner, and he offered Turner a scholarship for the minimum amount he was permitted, which was 25% of N.C. State’s annual tuition. Turner accepted the scholarship without ever having visited the campus.

In college, Turner received more individual instruction than he had in high school, which helped him develop his skills as a player. The Wolfpack coaches taught him how to read a pitcher in the stretch and take a catcher’s arm strength and pop time into consideration before trying to steal a base. Hart and another assistant, Brian Ward, helped Turner improve his swing by having him lift and kick his left leg in the batter's box.
