Update: Who Won The WBC Championship?
TEAMMATES DECIDED THE VICTORY
The matchup everyone was waiting for was Shohei Ohtani vs. Mike Trout, two Los Angeles Angels teammates, for the WBC title. Ohtani had a tremendous tournament, batting .435 and pitching to a 1.86 ERA, earning him the tournament's most valuable player award. But it was his pitch to Trout that will be remembered most.
In the ninth inning, with Japan leading by one run, Ohtani faced Trout with a full count. Everyone expected another fastball, but Ohtani surprised Trout with a slider, his third-most utilized pitch in 2022. Trout swung way too early, and Japan sealed the victory. Despite the strikeout, Trout took it in stride, saying that Ohtani had "won round one."
THE GAME
Japan won all seven games it played in the tournament, with its offense scoring 53 runs in the first six contests. However, Team USA pitchers limited Japan to just five hits, with the Japanese team spurred on by solo home runs from Munetaka Murakami and Kazuma Okamoto. Team USA’s Trea Turner hit a solo home run off Shota Imanaga to open the scoring with one out in the top of the second. It was Turner’s fifth home run of the tournament, tying the WBC record. Despite Turner's efforts, Team USA was 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position, a statistic that ultimately proved costly.
The championship game was a real spectacle, with the drama and stakes making it a must-watch for any sports fan. It was a true test of skill and determination, and both teams should be proud of their performances.
