Murray's skills continued to grow and by the age of 12 or 13, he was already playing pick-up games against high school and college players. At the age of six, Murray played in a league for ten-year-olds, displaying a remarkable talent for the sport. By the time he was in high school, he was already recognized as one of Canada's top young basketball prospects.

Murray attended Grand River Collegiate Institute in Kitchener, where he was named the MVP of the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) tournament in 2013. He played for the Kitchener-Waterloo Vipers AAU team during the summer, where he caught the attention of scouts and coaches across North America.

Murray's impressive high school career earned him a scholarship to play college basketball at the University of Kentucky, where he quickly became a standout player and fan favorite. He led the Wildcats to a #1 ranking early in the season and was named to the All-SEC First Team and the SEC All-Freshman Team. After just one season at Kentucky, Murray declared for the NBA draft and was selected seventh overall by the Denver Nuggets in 2016.
