How Did Dylan Carlson Get His Start With Baseball?

How Did Dylan Carlson Get His Start With Baseball?

Dylan Carlson, a talented outfielder in Major League Baseball (MLB), was born on October 23, 1998, in Elk Grove, California. Carlson grew up in a baseball family, and his father, Jeff Carlson, played an instrumental role in honing his skills.

Carlson attended Elk Grove High School in California, where he played baseball under his father's tutelage. As a senior, Carlson's statistics were impressive, batting .407 with nine home runs and 40 RBIs in 36 games. Carlson also pitched and recorded a 6-0 record with a 1.44 ERA. His father's coaching undoubtedly played a significant role in his development as a player.

Carlson's exposure to high-level baseball began when he was just 11 years old. He would watch his father's high school team practice from outside the fence, using a whiffle ball bat to hit tennis balls over the fence. His father, the team's head coach, would chase the ball's hitter back to the bullpen area, yelling, "Get off the field!"

As he got older, Carlson joined the team for batting practice and grounders, but only after finishing his homework in the bleachers. According to his former teammate, J.D. Davis, Carlson has always had a high baseball IQ, which he developed from a young age due to his exposure to the sport.

Among Carlson's most impressive attributes is his switch-hitting power, speed, and powerful left arm. In high school, he threw 93 mph off a mound, which drew the attention of the Toronto Blue Jays. Scouts recognized Carlson's advanced plate discipline, but some missed his upside because he played first base, and his father valued defense highly.

Despite scouts' pleas, Jeff Carlson refused to move his son to the outfield, where his speed and throwing arm would have been more visible. However, Jeff eventually gave in and moved his son to center field. According to Jeff, scouts began to take notice, and the Cardinals selected Carlson with the 33rd overall pick in the 2016 MLB draft.

Dylan Carlson is not the first Major League Baseball player to come from Elk Grove High School. Pitcher David Hernández was a notable alum, followed by catchers David Freitas and Jake Rodriguez. Outfielder Derek Hill was picked in the first round by the Detroit Tigers in 2014, and Nick Madrigal was selected by the Indians in 2015.

In conclusion, Dylan Carlson's early life was steeped in baseball, from his father's coaching to his exposure to high-level baseball from a young age. His skills and baseball IQ have made him one of the most promising young players in Major League Baseball today.
