Patrick Mahomes, the star quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, is known for his impressive arm strength and playmaking ability on the football field. Before he became a professional football player, Mahomes attended Texas Tech University from 2014 to 2016, where he played college football for the Red Raiders.

Mahomes chose to attend Texas Tech for a couple reasons. First and foremost, he was attracted to the university's athletics program and the opportunities it offered. Texas Tech has a strong tradition of producing NFL-caliber quarterbacks, and Mahomes saw the program as a great place to develop his skills and prepare for the next level. Mahomes also chose to attend Texas Tech because it was close to his hometown of Whitehouse, Texas. He grew up in Whitehouse and was a standout high school athlete, and he wanted to remain close to his family and friends while pursuing his college education and football career.

Mahomes played minimally during his freshman year as the backup quarterback to Davis Webb, but still managed to get 1,547 yards passed and 16 touchdowns that season. It wasn't until his sophomore year that Patrick got to be the starting quarterback for Texas Tech and really start showing his abilities off. He completed 66% of his passes for 4,653 yards and 36 touchdowns, leading the team to a 7-6 record.

In 2016, just before his junior season, Mahomes chose to leave baseball and focus solely on football. With his attention just on football, Mahomes threw for a total of 5,052 passing yards, leading the nation in yards per game with 421 on average. He was also responsible for 318 points in total, which was a staggering amount compared to other players in college football. Moreover, he recorded 53 touchdowns during this critical time period which elevated his record even further. All these stats combined together enabled him to obtain the highly coveted Sammy Baugh Trophy for being one of the best college passers in 2016!

On January 3, 2017, Patrick Mahomes II declared that he would be foregoing his final collegiate season and entering the National Football League Draft. This decision came as a shock to many who had expected the former Texas Tech Red Raider to remain with the program for another year. Despite this, his choice was made in order to maximize his potential opportunities at becoming an NFL star.
