Who is Bryce Harper?
Bryce Harper, one of Major League Baseball's (MLB) most recognizable names, was born on October 16, 1992, in Las Vegas, Nevada, to parents Sheri and Ron Harper. Harper was an athletic child who loved playing sports, although it's unclear who introduced him to baseball. From a young age, he showed a great deal of promise and potential, which he would eventually capitalize on in his professional career.
During high school, Harper played baseball and quickly established himself as a standout player. In May 2009, Sports Illustrated featured him in a cover story that compared him to basketball superstar LeBron James, calling him the "Chosen One" of baseball. After leaving high school after his Sophmore year, Harper attended the College of Southern Nevada, where he continued to play baseball in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). His college career was nothing short of remarkable, and he set a new record for the most home runs, hitting 31 in total. He was awarded the SWAC Player of the Year for his efforts.
Harper's college career came to an abrupt end when he was suspended following a two-match ejection, costing his team the National Junior College World Series tournament. Despite this, his performance during the tournament earned him the Golden Spikes Award, given to the best amateur player. Harper was then widely considered to be one of the most heavily touted draft players in recent history, being cited as a "five-tool player."
In the 2010 MLB draft, the Washington Nationals selected Harper as the first overall pick. He signed a 5-year contract worth $9.9 million and began playing in the minor leagues. He played for the team Hagerstown Suns and quickly established himself as one of the league's most exciting players, hitting .480 and collecting seven home runs, 10 doubles, and 23 RBIs. His performances attracted attention, and he was eventually selected to represent the United States in the 2011 All-Star Game weekend.
Harper made his MLB debut with the Washington Nationals in 2012, at the age of 19, in a match against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He quickly became a fan favorite, with his performance earning him the National League Rookie of the Month in May. He continued to perform well throughout the season and was eventually named the National League Rookie of the Year.
In the following years, Harper continued to establish himself as one of baseball's most exciting players. During the opening day of the 2013 season, he hit two home runs in a game against the Miami Marlins, becoming the youngest major league player to have done so. He helped the Nationals to their first division title in 2012, and in 2015 he was named the National League Most Valuable Player.
In 2019, Harper signed a 13-year, $330 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies, cementing his position as one of the highest-paid players in baseball. Since joining the Phillies, Harper has continued to perform at a high level, earning accolades such as the National League Player of the Week in 2020.
Harper's talent, coupled with his outgoing and flamboyant personality, has earned him several nicknames over the years, including "Bam Bam," "Mondo," and "The Showman." However, his talent on the field speaks for itself, and he continues to be one of baseball's most exciting and dynamic players.
