Is Kristaps Porzingis Injury Prone?

Is Kristaps Porzingis Injury Prone?
Kristaps Porzingis is one of the most talented and versatile big men in the NBA today. At 7'3", Porzingis possesses the ability to shoot from deep, block shots, and handle the ball like a guard. However, despite his skill set, the Latvian center has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, leading some to question whether he is injury prone.

The first major injury Porzingis suffered came in 2018 while playing for the New York Knicks. He was having the best season of his career, being named an All-Star that year before his season came to an unfortunate end due to a torn ACL. Porzingis underwent surgery and was unable to play for the entirety of the succeeding season.

In 2020, Porzingis suffered another major injury when he tore his meniscus in Game 1 of the Dallas Mavericks' first-round playoff series against the Los Angeles Clippers. He underwent surgery once again and missed several months before returning to action. When he did return, KP saw himself jumping in and out of the lineup due to a myriad of minor injuries.

Despite these setbacks, Porzingis maintains that he is not injury-prone. In an interview with The Washington Post, he acknowledged that his 7'3" frame and unique movement style may make him more susceptible to injury, but he argued that the injuries he has sustained have largely been contact injuries. He pointed to his ACL and meniscus tears as examples of injuries that are hard to avoid.

While it is true that Porzingis' injuries have largely been caused by contact, it is also true that he has missed a significant amount of time due to various ailments throughout his career. This has led some to question his durability and ability to stay healthy over the long term.

For the Dallas Mavericks, who traded for Porzingis in 2019 in hopes of forming a dynamic duo with superstar Luka Doncic, the Latvian center's health will be key to their success. If Porzingis can stay on the court and play at a high level, the Mavs will have a chance to compete for a championship. If he continues to be hampered by injuries, however, their chances will be greatly diminished.

Only time will tell whether Kristaps Porzingis is truly injury prone or if his injuries have largely been a result of bad luck. For now, all eyes will be on the Latvian center as he works to stay healthy and help lead the Dallas Mavericks to success in the coming seasons.
