Why Are The Dallas Mavericks Under Investigation?
The NBA has launched an investigation into the Dallas Mavericks after allegations surfaced that the team intentionally lost games to improve their draft position. The Mavericks' desperate attempt to secure better draft picks has put the team under scrutiny and potentially impacted its players, especially its star player Luka Doncic.
During an end-of-season media availability, Doncic addressed the concerns surrounding his future with the Mavericks amidst the investigation. "I'm happy here," Doncic said, via ESPN. "So there's nothing to worry [about]." These comments come after a report suggested that some within the organization fear Doncic could request a trade after the team failed to make the playoffs this season. Doncic called the report "funny" and added that he was unaware of such feelings within the organization.
While Doncic remains committed to the team, he acknowledges the need for the Mavericks to make significant changes. "Something's got to change, for sure," Doncic said. "I mean, last year we went to the Western Conference finals. We were having fun. I always talk about the chemistry we had. It was great. But something's got to change for sure."
The investigation into the Mavericks' alleged tanking has shone a spotlight on the organization's desperate attempts to improve their roster. The team's future is uncertain, especially with the potential of losing star guard Kyrie Irving, who joined the Mavericks in February. The chemistry between Doncic and Irving has been underwhelming, but Doncic remains hopeful that the two can develop a better rapport moving forward. "I think it's a great fit," Doncic said of playing with Irving. "Obviously people are going to say no [and] look at the results we are having, but like I said, chemistry and relationships take time. I wish he can still be here."
As the Mavericks face the consequences of their actions, their offseason will be crucial, not only in retaining Irving but also in addressing the issues uncovered by the investigation. The organization will need to make some tough decisions to get back on track, but Doncic's continued commitment to the team offers some hope for fans and executives in Dallas.
