Why Is Trae Young Called Ice Trae?
As the Atlanta Hawks continue to dominate on the court, one player has captured the attention of fans and teammates alike - Trae Young. Dubbed "Ice Trae" by none other than Quavo of the Migos, Young's nickname has become synonymous with his cold-blooded play on the court.
But how did this nickname come about? It all started on the night of the 2018 NBA draft, when Young was selected by the Atlanta Hawks. As fate would have it, he ended up meeting Quavo that very same night, and the two quickly hit it off. Quavo had been following Young's college career at Oklahoma and was impressed with his calculated playstyle. It was only natural for him to start calling him "Ice Trae."
As their friendship blossomed, Quavo even gifted Young a diamond-encrusted basketball chain with "Ice Trae" and the number 11 on it. But it's not just Quavo who's a fan - Atlanta Hawks fans can be heard chanting "ICE TRAE! ICE TRAE! ICE TRAE!" as Young performs clutch moves and shoots from the logo at the State Farm Arena.
In an interview with GQ Sports, Young said of the nickname and gift, "I want to show y’all probably my favorite chain. Quay got it for me my rookie year. It was like my welcome to Atlanta gift he gave me. There’s a lot of diamonds in here, I ain’t never really asked Quay what the details were. I don’t wanna get all into detail, but I was just appreciative of it."
As the Atlanta Hawks continue to make their mark on the NBA, Trae Young and his nickname "Ice Trae" are sure to be a big part of the team's success. So, as the Atlanta Hawks fans continue to chant "ICE TRAE! ICE TRAE! ICE TRAE!" in the State Farm Arena, let's all sit back and enjoy the rise of Trae Young and his nickname in the world of basketball.
